If your lawn mower engine continues to sputter or cough even after you have turned it off, experts refer to this event as dieseling.

What is dieseling?

  • It is a reference to fuel igniting without spark in your engine.

What are causes of dieseling?

Any of these (or a combination of several) could be the possible culprits:

  • Stale fuel
  • Using a lower octane fuel than required, which tends to vaporizes more easily
  • Installing the wrong spark plug
  • Build-up of carbon in the combustion chamber
  • Incorrectly adjusted spark timing
  • Incorrect adjustment of  the fuel-air mixture
