Keeping your carburetor and linkages clean and well adjusted is essential for making sure that your lawn mower engine is running smoothly and without problems.

Here are a few tips:

Briggs & Stratton Air Filters

Briggs & Stratton Air Filters

  • One of the most common causes for black smoke discharging from the exhaust is a dirty, clogged, and choked air filter. Inspect the air filter on your engine to make certain that the air coming into the carburetor is clean and free of dirt, debris, and garden remains. Clean the filter or replace with a new Briggs & Stratton air filter.
  • Constant vibration of your lawn mower can affect the settings of the mixture screws on the machine carburetor, so make sure to adjust them periodically.
  • Linkages attached to the carburetor’s throttle and choke plates can become sticky when they get dirty – they need to be regularly cleaned.
  • Your lawn mower is constantly in close contact with garden debris – grass, branches, twigs, leaves and all kinds of other remains. This debris does not stay merely on the outside of your machine, but penetrates to the inside of the engine. Accumulation inside the carburetor can clog fuel and air passages and this results in engine performance decline or complete stoppage of the engine.
  • By keeping your carburetor clean and well taken care of, you will avert most of these problems and keep your engine running smoothly. If you clean the carburetor on a regular basis, you won’t even need to remove the carburetor from the engine in order to clean it.
