Take care of your lawn mower and it will do an excellent job for a very long time.

Three essential maintenance steps:

Change the oil

The oil in your lawnmower should be changed at the beginning of every season. Over the months that your machine is in heavy use, grass, dirt and other impurities will compile in the oil.  If you don’t clean the contaminated oil, it could ruin your lawn mower engine. Check the owner’s manual for the proper procedure for this job.

Change the spark plug

The space at the end of the spark plug (where the metal end bends at a 90 degree angle) is called the gap. It is advisable to double-check the gap with an inexpensive spark plug gap tool. Change the plug every year so you can start the cutting season with a new spark plug and a machine in excellent working condition.

Clean the air filter

In an accordion-style paper type filter, remove the filter cover and, using a high-pressure air hose, blow out all the debris.

Lawn Mower Engine Foam Filter

If your lawn mower has a foam filter, wash it well in a water and detergent solution.  After allowing the foam filter to dry, apply a few drops of oil to it. Both paper and foam filters need to be replaced once they wear out.
